DISTANCE RUNNING IS ABOUT CONSISTENCY. Practices are mandatory. Please provide a note from a parent/guardian about any conflicting commitments.
IF THERE ARE NO TRYOUTS, HOW CAN I MAKE VARSITY? The roster for cross country is objective. Varsity teams can only have 7 athletes compete.
- MUST attend all practices. (A note is needed about conflicting commitments).
- Finish with a result that places you in our top 7. For our first meet, if you are one of our fastest 7 in practice, then you will be on our varsity roster. After that, at the previous meet, if you finish with a time that puts you in the top 7, you will be on the varsity roster for the next meet. That means if you miss a meet, you likely will not make varsity for the next meet.
- Coaches have the final say about varsity roster in any extenuating circumstances.
NUTRITION - Eating and hydrating properly are essential for each practice. Always pack 2 healthy snacks: one for about 30-45 minutes before practice begins and one for after practice to hold you over before dinner. Drink about 1.5 liters of water throughout the school day. You should drink about 3 liters of water each day. On morning practice days, pack a breakfast to eat before or during first period (PBJ, banana, protein shake, apple, hard boiled eggs, etc.).
MENTAL & PHYSICAL HEALTH - Your growing body and brain are our first priority. However, Coach O'Connor and Coach Alexanderson are not health professionals. Olympus High School has TOSH athletic trainers on staff available during our practice times who can help diagnose injury and provide referrals to doctors/nutritionists/therapists, etc. For any injury, please provide a licensed professional's note with their prescribed course of action.
