Answers to Frequently Asked Questions:
WHAT IS CROSS COUNTRY? A three mile race on a dirt or grass course. A pure team sport. Each team fields 7 runners. The top 5 finishers on each team earn points that correspond to their place. If your 1st runner finishes 1st, your team gets 1 point. If your 2nd runner finishes 7th, you get another 7 points, etc. The team with the lowest score wins. A perfect score is 15 points.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED? Quality RUNNING shoes. A watch that can take splits (no GPS required). A water bottle. Athletic clothes for ALL weather. Socks made with synthetic material (not cotton). Cross country spikes or racing flats are optional for JV and required for varsity.
HOW DO I SIGN UP? By August 7, you must obtain UHSAA paperwork from your doctor showing that you passed your physical. Complete registration on registermyathlete.com. Pay fees. Be academically eligible with a 2.0 GPA and no more than one F.
WHEN IS THE FIRST OFFICIAL DAY OF PRACTICE? Monday, August 7th at 7:30am.
WHEN IS MANDATORY PRACTICE? Generally, we have afternoon practice Mon-Thurs at 2:30pm and will last between 1 - 2 hours (the longer practice are days we go off campus to run at parks or on trails). On Fridays (when we don't have meets), practice begins at 7:00am and will end with time for athletes to get ready for first period at 8:30am. While daylight is early, there will be some days when we will have practice before school - at 6:10am - the days this happens depends on our race schedule for that week.
IS THERE SUMMER TRAINING? Yes. The calendar is posted on the “Summer Training” page on this website. Please join our XC GroupMe to stay involved. To join the fun, meet us Monday - Saturday at the locations listed on our weekly "Updates" page.
WHAT IS THE MILEAGE CLUB? You can join the 300, 400, or 500 mile club if you run 300 (or more) miles through the summer (start of summer training through mid-September). At the end of every month, you will be asked to submit your miles on the website. Those who are eligible for the award will receive a t-shirt at the end of the 3 months.
ARE THERE SOCIAL EVENTS? Yes! We plan to do a Car Wash in July in front of Olympus as a fundraiser! Early in August, we go to the Jordanelle Reservoir for a full day of fun. In September, we travel to Boise, Idaho for an awesome fun-filled Travel Meet, the Bob Firman Invitational! During the season, parents volunteer to host pasta parties to fuel us for our competitions. Parents can sign up on the website’s “Volunteer Sign Up” page. Bus rides and post-race time are often the best part, too!
